Intensive Course and Community Engagement Program: Increasing Social Concern in the Global World

Program Objective

• To introduce and develop awareness of social problems in a developing country
• To increase social empathy of the students;
• To develop sense of responsibility of the students to think about global problems and to propose the solution;
• To increase culture tolerance of the students;
• To introduce Indonesian culture and society amongst international students within an immersion program.

Specific Goals

• To develop a basic understanding of Bahasa Indonesia;
• To learn some Indonesian cultures;
• To experience firsthand engagement with the local Indonesian community;
• To explore in depth specific social justice issues in an Indonesian context.

Proposed Content Areas

• Introduction to Indonesian language.
• History, politics and culture of Indonesia.
• Community engagement / social justice programs.

Proposed Academic Format

• In-class learning combined with fieldtrips and site visits.
• Peer-to-peer learning.
• Three day social justice immersion.

What Will You Do?

This summer program is your way to get beyond ordinary life. It can change you in a whole new person. You will get your missions accomplished by living as local people in three days-live-in you will be returning home enriched with Bahasa Indonesia and knowledge of Indonesia cultures.

Social Mission

Three days living in Banjaran District

• Stay in a local family, your host parents will take you to experience their everyday morning life.
• Be an English teacher, a way to improve local’s English skill. In the afternoon, you will be teach small children and secondary students English.
• Be an environmentalist, transform your environment awareness into actions. Let’s plant trees and make biosphere absorb on holes.

Academic Mission

Seven days learning Bahasa Indonesia and knowledge of Indonesian culture.

• Introduction to Indonesian history and society, you will study about Pluralism, Islam in Indonesia, Indonesian Politics and Legal System.
• The importance of Bandung city in the history of Asia & Africa countries development.

Cultural Mission

Eight learning sessions of Saman Dance & exploring cultural Sites

• Perform the famous Indonesian traditional dance Saman Dance.
• Visit cultural places in Bandung, Grand City, Asia & Africa Conference Museum, Perjuangan Monument, Gedung Sate, and Geology Museum.
• Refresh your mind with sightseeing, Kawah Putih, Situ Patenggang, Tea Plantation and Tea Factory.
